- Rare original engraving, titled: 'Apollo / Sol and the Four Seasons'. In the center, within a decoratvie border: the Greek sun god Apollo on a chariot drawn by four winged horses. Several Psykhai / Psyches accompany him. On the ground are personifications of the four seasons (l-r: spring, summer, autumn, winter). The border is adorned with the Anemoi (four cardinal Winds) blowing into the image. Original etching on a verge type hand laid paper. Engraved by Philips Galle after Johannus Stradanus. Philip (or Philips) Galle (Haarlem 1537 - Antwerp 1612) was a Dutch publisher, engraver and designer. He is mainly known for publishing Old Master prints, reproductive engravings of paintings. Johannus Stradanus (also: Jan van der Straat or Giovanni Stradano, 1523-1605) was a Flanders-born mannerist artist active in 16th century Florence. Condition: Good, given age. Several small tears in paper edges and minimal paper loss in the bottom right margin, backed with paper and acid-free archival tape. A similarly treated small tear in the top margin. With margin! The overall size is ca. 12.2 x 8.9 inch. The image size is ca. 11.8 x 8.7 inch. The overall size is ca. 31 x 22.5 cm. The image size is ca. 30 x 22 cm.
