Typed document signed, in German, 4to, Vienna, June 18, 1903
- This historic document is the program for the upcoming meeting of the important Sixth Zionist Congress, Herzl's last Congress. "Esteemed Colleague, We take the pleasure in informing you of the following program for our 6th Congress. Should the program have any changes, we will not fail to give you further information."There are 15 agenda items including, Opening by Dr. Th. Herzl; Financial Report; Emigration and resettlement. Reporter: Dr. M. Nordau; The Zionism and the Welfare institutions. Reporters: I. Zangwill and S. Sokolow; Report of the National fund . Organization and propaganda, reporter . Francis Montefiore, Dr. Bodenheimer . Report of the Jewish Colonial Bank, Reporter, D. Wolffshon." Above the typed, "Chairman" he signs, "Herzl."The Sixth Zionist Congress would be the last one Herzl chaired. He died the following year. A British government proposal for a Jewish homeland in East Africa, known as the Uganda Proposal, was the key topic under discussion at this Sixth Congress. Herzl considered this idea as possible temporary homeland for Jews as violence escalated in the Russian Empire and in Western Europe. In a narrow vote, delegated decided to send a group to East Africa to examine the viability of the proposal. Condition: Overall good condition, margin folds, foxing at margins.
