An Essay upon the Original and nature of the Government. III. An Essay upon the Advancement of Trade in Ireland. IV. Upon the Conjuncture of Affairs in Octob. 1763. V. Upon the Excesses of Grief. VI. An Essay on the Cure of the Gout by Moxa. Volume II (1690): In Four Essays I. Upon Ancient and Modern Learning, II. Upon the Gardens of Epicurus. III. Upon Heroick Vertue. IV. Upon Poetry. Volume III (1701): Containing I. An Essay on Popular Discontents, II. An Essay upon Health and Long Life, III. A Defence of the Essay upon Antient and Modern Learning. Volume I is the fourth edition, Volume II is the Second edition, Volume III is the first edition. Withan inscription by prior owner stating 'Sr Wm Wheler' to title page of volume I. This could possiblybe the hand ofone of the Wheler Baronets, of the City of Westminster. There have been three Wheler Baronetssince the publication of this work, the 3rd Baronet, 5thBaronet and 6th Baronet. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature, history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller, Humphrey Moseley and began his, unfortunately unfinished, PhD dissertation on him. Sir William Temple was an English statesman and essayist. His Miscellanea is his main publication of his works. Condition: In full calf bindings. All volumes have been rebacked with original boards preserved. Externally, generally smart with patches of heavy rubbing to the board edges and some spots to boards. Bumping to the extremities. Spotting to the foredge of all volumes. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, Charles Rowe. Blind stamp to the title page and endpapers of all volumes, Birbeck College Library. Prior owner's signature to the title page ofvolume I, Sr Wm Wheler. Fronthinge to volume III isslightly strained but firm. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with instances of the odd spot throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD..
