L'Arsenal a Stockholm. Das Zeuhauss in Stockholm. L'Arsenal a Stockholm
Augsburg.. No date. Ca. 1760.. Copperplate engraving, handcolored, plate mark 11 3/4 x 16 1/4 inches on sheet 14 x 18 1/4 inches. Right margin trimmed to just outside plate mark, 1 1/2 inch curved tear to left lower edge (outside plate area), crease and two short splits in left margin, faint dampstain to lower right corner (barely visible), a few foxed spots. A view of the armoury (Tyghuset) in Stockholm, Sweden, one of a series "Collection des Prospects." This is an example of a "vue d'optique" or perspective view, a popular print from the second half of the 18th century, designed to be projected with a viewing device (a zograscope or perspective glass) which enhanced the illusion of depth and perspective, providing something of a 3D effect. There is a most interesting and thorough article by C.J. Kaldenbach "Perspective Views which was originally published in Print Quarterly (June 1985) which can be accessed on the web. .
