Autograph Letter Signed ("JFW Herschel"), to General P-, introducing his son
Collingwood [House, Hawkhurst], 1867. 3 pp. Very Good, old folds. 3 pp. Reading in part: "This will be handed to you by my son Lieut. John Herschel R[oyal] B[engal] E[ngineers] ... who is very desirous of an introduction to you...." Herschel also regrets that he will not be able to attend a soiree, for "my state of health is such as to preclude altogether my coming up to London." In addition to being a military engineer and surveyor, the younger John Herschel (1837-1921) was, like his father and grandfather, a noted astronomer.
