Appleton & Co., New York 1873 - lg. 8vo, orig. brown pebbled cloth-covered bds, bright gold titles on spine and fb with embossed gold and black decoration on spine and fb, blind emb. outline on back bd, some bumping to bd edges, bumping to spine ends without loss, mild rubbing to bottom edges, few light tiny scuffs, else bright, clean and tight; eps, prev. owner 2x3in engraved bookplate ft. pastedown, small hand-written (non-authorial) presentation card 2nd ffep to Lady Burdett-Coutts dated 28th August 1873, else internally quite clean, bright and unmarked; steel eng. frontis and 12 other full pg. steel engravings, all with orig. clean attached tissue; pp.ix,10-444 inc. 5 appendices; no dj, volume protected in clear mylar cover. A very nice first printing of a rather scarce volume. Lady Burdett-Coutts, previous owner and presentee (bookplate has initials B-C) was a book collector of some note.
