Exiles - a play in three acts
Jonathan Cape, London., 1921 [i.e. 1924]. Second U.K. edition. Second issue in black cloth stamped ''JONATHAN CAPE'' in gilt at the tail of spine but with the original Egoist Press title-page. 1000 sets of sheets were printed for the Egoist Press edition of 1921, of which 500 were bound in green buckram. In 1924, when the Egoist Press passed the book on to Jonathan Cape, there were 168 of these bound copies and 500 sets of sheets ''on hand unsold'' (Slocum A14 note). Cape then issued the sheets in new black cloth but with the original Egoist Press title-page and in the Egoist Press dustwrapper. The odd thing about this is that the dimensions of the text block in the second issue are slightly larger than those of the first. Octavo. pp [vi], 154. Exiles is Joyce's only play, written at about the time he started work on Ulysses. It owes a certain debt to Ibsen, which is perhaps unsurprising when we remember that Joyce's first published work was a review of When We Dead Awaken in 1900.Spotting throughout particularly at edges. Very good bright copy. No dustwrapper.
