Cover-title:] Circassian Customs.
Amman: no publisher, [1958] - Small octavo. Original red paper boards, front board lettered in gilt. Spine sunned rolled, rear joint split at foot, tips bumped and slightly worn, endpapers browned. A very good copy. Half-tone photographic portrait frontispiece, 12 photographs to the text, all but one full-page, sketch-map. First and only edition, apparently translated from an unpublished Arabic original, and uncommon, with three copies only in libraries world-wide (Lebanese American University, US State Department, and Portland State University). The first Circassian settlers arrived in Jordan in 1878; today the Circassian population of Jordan is the second-largest outside their homeland in the Russian Caucasus, after Turkey. The author (whose name, Charkas, is Arabic for Circassian) claims to have written this book "to draw the attention of the Circassians of today to the lofty ideals and noble aims for which their ancestors lived and died" (Introduction). Chapters cover horsemanship, marriage, family life, and dress. Amjad Jaimoukha, Circassian Customs & Traditions, p. 153. [Attributes: First Edition]
