It is an invaluable source, not only for its exceptional pictorial interest, but also for the evidence it provides of the concerted attempt in the July Monarchy to promote themorale de Franklin. Édouard Charton (11 May 1807-27 February 1890) was an eminent French literary figure who was the founder and, for fifty-five years (1833-88), editor-in-chief of the publication Magasin pittoresque, in addition to serving for thirty years (1860-90) as director of publication for Hachette .
