A Visit to North America and the English settlements in Illinois, with a winter residence at Philadelphia; solely to ascertain the actual prospects of the emigrating agriculturist, mechanic, and commercial speculator.
London Drury 1821 - First edition. 8vo., xii, 224pp., 3-line errata with "directions to binder" slip at end, lithograph frontispiece and 13 lithograph plates, scattered light foxing, contemporary polished calf gilt, a fine copy. Welby visited the English settlement in 1819, made a cursory examination, and failing to find 'all the comforts of home,' concluded that it was a failure. In spite of the hostile attitude of the writer, the book presents a valuable picture of western life and conditions and gives an idea of the difficulties which the promotors of the English settlement had to contend with. Sabin 102514; Buck 150; Howes W229. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
