C. Daubigny et son oeuvre gravé Eaux-fortes et bois inédits par C. Daubigny, Karl Daubigny, Léon Lhermitte
Paris, France: A. Lévy, 1875. Ce n'est pas une édition bilingue. Texte en français uniquement, pas en anglais. This is not a bilingual edition. Text in French only, not in English. First edition. Presumed first printing. Apparently signed by the author, but not so guaranteed. Printed and bound in France by Albert Quantin, imprimeur. Ex library with all the usual ex library markings: University of Chicago Library acquisition plate to the front pastedown, de-accession stamps to the front and rear FEPs, the title page and the text page following the title page. The two FEPs opposite the front and rear pastedowns neatly excised. 10.5 x 7 inches. Contemporary three-quarter morocco, brown, with matching brown buckram boards. With fairly crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the hubbed spine. Hinges strong; text block solidly attached to the binding, except that binding weak at pp. 132-33 with subsequent gathering loose. Unbumped spine head and tail, and the corners are sharp. T.E.G. 241 numbered pages. With 8 illustrations including 7 plates. Note that apparently eleven illustrations were originally contemplated for this edition, as reflected in the "Table des gravures contenues dans ce volume", but that only 8 were included. There is no evidence that any illustrated pages or plates have been excised from this volume. Present are: half title page illustration [not a plate as such], frontispiece portrait, and plates opposite pages 31, 57, 76, 91, 167, and 174. The plates called for opposite pages 128, 209 and 227 are not present. Note that the original engraving Le village pres Bonnieres, by Karl Daubigny, called for at 174 actually appears at 76. Unable to identify the plate appearing at 174. Of the plates present in this first edition, 5 appear to be original engravings and 2 are héliogravures. All plates are exceptionally clean and there are no ex library stamps on them. Note that the frontispiece page is semi-detached along the hinge but holding fast. On the colophon page [between pages 226 and 228] there is a gift inscription from the author, "a M. [?], hommage de l'auteur" and his possible signature, F. Henriet, all in soft pencil. Apart from the ex library markings, and very light and infrequent scattered foxing, the book is clean. A Very Good Minus copy. Downgraded due to the ex library status but upgraded due to the very good state of the plates and due to the presence of the rare, if genuine, author's signature.. First Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good Minus. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
