Five Short Stories by Marcel Ayme; The State of Grace, The Dwarf, Rue de l'Evangile, Legend of Poldevia, The Seven-League Boots
Newtown: Bird & Bull Press, 1994. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Schanilec, Gaylord. No. 145 of 150, with an extra suite of illustrations, 4to - over 9.75" to 12" tall, 103 pp. As Henry Morris so eloquently says in his Preface, "Mixing fantasy with reality must be one of the most difficult kinds of writing to do well - but Marcel Ayme [1902-1967] has mastered the art and many of his stories combine the real and the unreal so skillfully that the difference between the two blurs in the mind of the reader. Although he writes with great wit and humor, beneath the laughter there are serious observations on human foibles, politics, religion and the Church. The breadth of Ayme's understanding of human behavior and his love of ordinary people is evident throughout all these stories". With ten illustrations by Gaylord Schanilec (b. 1955), artist, writer, letterpress printer, designer and illustrator, who has set the standard for contemporary artist's books over the last 30 years. The proprietor of the press Midnight Paper Sales, he uses traditional wood engraving processes (as he explains, "the winters in Wisconsin are long") to create exquisite, highly detailed wood engravings. A recent work "Mayflies of the Driftless Region" won a Judges Choice Award at the 2005 Oxford Fine Press Bookfair. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in full navy blue cloth, blue leather spine label with gilt lettering and border, title page in blue and black, with a blue fleur-de-lis above the title, story numbers and titles in blue, the engravings tipped in; Dante types on Arches mouldmade paper, quarto size (approximately 10" tall), pagination: (1)-100, blanks (101-102), colophon (103); limited edition of 150 copies, this no. 145.
