Philadelphia: W. B. Saunders, 1898. - 386 pp; 5 plates; text figs. Original cloth. Very Good. First Edition. SIGNED BY WILLIAM W. KEEN: "To Dr. Roland F. Fleck/ with the kind regards of/ W. W. Keen/ Philadelphia/ June 5, 1920." "In 1876, Keen delivered the fifth Toner Lecture on the surgical complications and sequels of continued fevers . which was published in 1877 as a 68 page monograph. In 1896, Keen delivered the Shattuck Lecture before the Massachusetts Medical Society. These lectures formed the basis for his Surgical Complications. He included in the volume the six complications and sequels discussed in his Toner Lecture and added a chapter on the surgical affections of typhoid fever and twelve chapters on complications of particular organs and regions. Most books on complications of surgery were not written until the twentieth century. In this respect Keen's work is quite remarkable" (Rutkow GS178).
