Alfred William Howitt (1830-1908), geologist and anthropologist, and sometime fellow at Queen's College Melbourne, was a close associate of Walter Baldwin Spencer, who helped prepare the present work. Howitt, and another, "it may fairly be claimed [.] were pioneers of the new anthropology, and that by their researches into the organization of the human family they gave the study direction" (ODNB). Thick 8vo, (xx) (ii errata), 819 pp, a map plus 9 folding maps, a folding chart, 58 plates in text all black and white. Original green gilt-decorated cloth, some etched spots on the boards and spine. Corners little rubbed & bumped, a small private owners stamp on front & back endpaper, spine tips a little rubbed. Internally tight and clean.
