PETITNICOLAS EARLY CATHOLIC MISSIONS AND MISSIONARIES IN KOREA THE RARE & TRUE ACCOUNT OF KOREAN OFFICIALS BEHEADING FRENCH CATHOLIC MISSIONARIES IN 1866 A true and early account of the murder of French Catholic missionaries in Korea. THE MARTYR: MICHEL-ALEXANDRE PETITNICOLAS: Born in 1828, he was a Petitnicolas seminarian at Châtel in 1844 and the major seminary of Saint-Die. He stayed for two years in foreign missions before being ordained a priest in 1852. HE BECAME A MISSIONARY AND WENT TO KUMBAKONAM, KOREA: Vicar in Laveline-devant-Bruyeres for a year, he went on a mission to Pondicherry on 5 August 1853. In the Korean district of Kumbakonam, involving 300 villages and some 10,000 Korean Christians. He did not like the climate, was then sent to Hong Kong, from 1855 to 1857 to learn Chinese. In March 1858 he was smuggled into Korea again and began to visit the small Christian communities. He learned Korean with some ease and began to write a Latin-Korean dictionary. He got into major trouble with the Korean government, who began a the Christian persecution of 1860. He continued his missionary work, and supported native Korean priests. At the time of the bloody persecution of Christians in 1866 he was arrested along with Fr. POURTHIE. After a few weeks of very challenging detention they were both beheaded on 12 March 1866. Four other priests had already suffered the same fate on March 8th, 1866. Many times exhumed his body was deposited in the vault of the cathedral Seoul on 10 September 1900 ITEM #1 OF TWO ITEMS IN THIS LISTING: A VERY RARE BOOK ! This is a very rare work on the activities and eventual martyrdom of two French missionaries. There are very few resources covering the early period of French missionary work in Korea. Seldom found on the market, this work covers the missionary activities carried out by Petinicolas, his travels, studies, work with Korean Christian villages. Work at Pondiechery in Shanghai, travel to Seoul. Commentaries on Korea, study of Korean in Hong Kong, administration 1856-1857, and his continued work with Korean village Christians. ITEM #2: AN EARLY AND RARE ARTICLE, 1874: In the Feburary 13, 1874 issue of "LES MISSIONS CATHOLIQUES" is an excellent article under the "BIBLIOGRAPHIE" heading, with title: "UN MARTYR EN COREE, VIE DE MICHAEL-ALEXANDRER PETITNICOLAS, missionnaire decapite pour la foi le 12 Mars 1866; par M. L'Abbe Renard, aumonier des Soeurs hospitalieres du Saint-Espirit, 1 volume in 8 de 190 pages [1873]. This is an excellent article discussing, outlining with a synopsis the above book and martyr Michel-Alexandre Petitnicolas, in Korea, 1866. See photos posted to our website for the contents pages and the above article front page. CONDITION: The book is in its original blue boards, with gold stamped decorations and titles. The corners, head/tail of spine the usual wear, four institutional stamps, else a clean text, with a few fox spots here and there. Solid, firm copy.
