- Paris, Arthus Bertrand, c. 1845. Large folio. Contemporary morocco-backed pebble-grained cloth boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt; pp. [2], 40 engraved and hand-coloured plates; binding a little worn; internally, apart from a few spots here and there, a good copy of an extremely rare collection of plates. First edition. This is the zoological atlas volume of a rarely complete publication; the results of Lefebvre's scientific expedition to Ethiopia. Lefebvre, a navy officer, learned Amharic in Cairo before travelling to Ethiopia with the zoologist Antoine Petit and the botanist LÃ on Richard Quartin-Dillon in the team. The publication of the results of this expedition, 3 atlas and 6 text volumes, has never appeared complete on the antiquarian market, neither have the atlas volumes. The plates are among the most accurate and beautiful depictions of Ethiopian wildlife before the photographic era. 8 plates are of mammals, 14 with birds, 8 reptiles and fish, and the last 10 depict insects. Gay 2653. Fumagalli 189 b. Henze III, 175. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
