- Japan 1940, Jacoulet. A single deluxe large print, sheet size 35 x 46 cm., woodblock printed by hand on hand-made paper, carved by Maeda, printed by Honda, Uchikawa & Ogawa. ** FIRST & ONLY LIMITED NUMBERED EDITION OF 150 COPIES ** Cited in R. Miles: THE PRINTS OF PAUL JACOULET, illustrated as #69, descriptive text on page 105. Per Miles, he states that the edition of 150 were fully printed, intended edition of 350 but fewer than 150 impressions were actually done. His comment: "This is the finest, of Jacoulet's Korean worker series, which he never formally offered as a series.crit- ics consider these are the finest of all the artist's sets. Note the gauffrage that indicates the paint level in his bowl, and the raised decorations on the pot, made with an additional block." Sealed with the butterfly in cinnabar just below Jacoulet's pencil signature. The paper also has a "PJ" watermark in the lower left corner and was published 22 September, 1940. The print is basically a very nice copy, with some marginal toning, and without any other real flaw to mention. Framed & glazed. A copy recently sold at auction for $1500.
