Slavery Contract, Three Creole Slaves - Cuba 1870
Very Good. 1870. Manuscript. Manuscript with black ink, green "50 cs" revenue stamp near top edge, blind embossed crest of Spain in top left corner, and black government stamp in bottom left corner. Content is in Spanish. There is a closed 5" tear from top right corner, affects some content. Light toning and wear to edges and light foxing. This manuscript documents the sale of three Creole slaves, all in their 20's, to Don Miguel Noguras. They were sold by Don Pedro Catasus for 1800 pesos in 1870. The signatures of Noguras and Catasus are at the bottom of the manuscript. Although Spain formally ended African slave trade to Cuba in the 1820s, Cuba remained one of the most common destinations for slave ships through the 1860s. Chinese slave ships continued to arrive into the 1870's. Slavery itself was not abolished in Cuba until 1886.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 1 pp .
