A Discoverie of the True Causes why Ireland was never entirely Subdued, nor brought under Obedience of the Crowne of England, Until the Beginning of His Majesties happie Raigne
LONDON : A Millar, 1767 A very good copy of this work first published in 1612. Sir John Davies (1569-1626) was first sent to Ireland in 1603, and subsequently appointed Attorney General in 1606 by James I. He wrote the work in 1611, expressing, among other opinions , his disapproval of the Brehon Law system in Ireland and his justification for introducing English Common Law. In contemporary full leather binding, with gilt tooled borders to boards, raised bands and gilt compartments and title label to spine. The binding has some rubbing to spine joints, edges and corners, and a couple of scuffs on the boards. With armorial bookplate of William Pym of Hasells Hall - who became High Sheriff of Bedfordshire - on the front pastedown. Contents in lovely clean condition. From p243 onwards, there is an indent in the outer margin of pages - with small loss of blank page not text - possibly the result of a burn. With publisher's catalogue at the rear.
