London: Hodder and Stoughton. [1921]. First edition with these illustrations, first printing. First edition with these illustrations, first printing. Publisher's original light blue cloth with titles and illustration in gilt, blue and green to the upper board and spine. Quarto. 185pp. Colour frontispiece and 11 further colour plates mounted on card, black and white illustrations throughout the text by Mabel Lucie Attwell. A lovely near fine copy, the binding square and bright with some softening at the spine tips and mild rubbing at the extremities. The contents are entirely complete and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. All of the plates are present as called for and in fine condition without creasing or tears. The text block edge is a little spotted otherwise the pages remain clean and bright throughout. An excellent example. Very scarce in the first edition. This beautifully illustrated edition went through many reprints throughout the 1920's, 30's and 40's and was re-issued in facsimile in 1979 for the centennial of the artist's birth. Several of the illustrations were also used for May Byron's abridgement of the text for younger children. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
