The Mint: A Day-Book of the R.A.F. Depot Between August and December 1922 with Later Notes
th Later Notes 1955 - A first and limited edition of this fascinating glimpse into daily R. A. F. lifein the 1920s by a truly extraordinary man, somewhat shocking and printedposthumously due to early 1900s sensitivity to barrack-room language and four letter words. This edition was limited to two thousand copies for sale, of which this copy is listed as a 'Review' copy. With a newspaper clipping of the 1955 review by E. M. Forster for The Listener loosely inserted. The Mint was written by T. E. Lawrence, Lawrence of Arabia. It concerns the period following the First World War when Lawrence decided to disappear from public view. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force under an assumed name and became Aircraftman Ross. The book is a closely-observed autobiographical account of his experiences in the RAF. The book covers his initial training at RAF Uxbridge in 1922 and a part of his service at RAF Cranwell, 192526. Lawrence stated that the book should not be published until after his death. When The Mint was finally published in 1955 there were two editions, the expurgated edition and a limited edition containing the full uncensored text. Condition: In a quarter morocco binding with cloth cover boards, in a presentation slipcase. Externally excellent withvery little shelfwear. The slipcase is sound although slightly sunnedwith some marks. Internally, firmly bound, beautifully bright and clean throughout. Overall: FINE with a very good slipcase. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
