London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1823. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes, octavo, pp.vii, 336; pp.333. In the publisher's grey boards with green cloth spine, with paper title labels. Some occasional spotting, textblock slightly toned, Boards show moderate wear to the edges with the corners a trifle bumped, cloth to spines showing some moderate wear with some splitting along the joints, some loss to the head and tail, and some loss of the labels. A very good example. A Sussex man, Phillips worked as a banker in Worthing before moving to London and setting up an academy for young gentlemen. He moved to Brighton in 1823 by which time he had become well known for his interests in botany, horticulture, and landscape gardening. A fellow of both the Linnean Society and the Royal Horticultural Society he wrote various titles on plants and gardening. He gained his first commission in 1822 to lay out the Level, this was followed by various other projects in the Brighton and Hove area.
