The Master of Ballantrae: A Winter's Tale
London - Cassell & Company 1889 - A tale of two feuding noblemen brothers. The novel opens in Scotland in 1745 amid the Jacobite uprising. To ensure the family's preservation, one brother joins Bonnie Prince Charlie's rebels whilst the other remains a loyalist. Robert Louis Stevenson explores the conflict and adventure that follows. A first issue of the first edition (letter 'l' missing from footnote on p41), with publisher's advertisements bound in at rear of book. A printed dedication from Stevenson (Waikiki, May 17, 1889) follows the title page. Charming decoration to both boards and spine. Condition: In a red cloth binding with black lettering and pictorial designs. Externally a trifle rubbed. Bumping to corners and head and tail of spine. Spine is sunned. Some dampstaining to boards. Internally, front hingeis strained. Binding is slightly strained in places throughout. Foxed to first and last few pages, and to fore-edge of pages, otherwise fairly clean with only a few scattered spots. Ink inscription to half-title page. Overall: GOOD.
