Ernest Benn, London 1923 - First edition. Quarto. Hardcover. Very good: 2 cm tear to the spine re-glued. Light wear to extemities. Priced accordingly. 264 Pages, followed by 49 plates in black and white each preceeded by tissue guards. One of 50 deluxe copies printed on handmade paper and bound in pigskin. An early standard work on the subject of Chinese painting. The paintings were reproduced from various collections, such as Eumorfopoulos, Yamanaka, Stoclet, Kokka and the British Museum. In 1913 Waley was appointed Assistant Keeper of Oriental Prints and Manuscripts at the British Museum. Waley's supervisor at the Museum was the poet and scholar Laurence Binyon, and under his nominal tutelage Waley taught himself to read Classical Chinese and Classical Japanese, partly to help catalogue the paintings in the Museum's collection.
