First edition of Antonio Manuzio's compilation of 15th- and early 16th-century voyages from Venice to Persia, India, and Constantinople. He offers the accounts of Giosofat Barbaro's two embassies, to the Azov Tartars in 1436 and to Persia in 1471; Ambrogio Contarini's embassy to Persia in 1473; Aloigi de Giovanni's voyage to Persia and India in 1529; Benedetto Ramberti's voyage to and travels in Turkey in 1539; and an anonymous narrative of the Turkish expedition against the Portuguese in India in 1538.    Binding: 19th-century dark red morocco modestly tooled in blind on covers, lettered in gilt on spine. Gilt supra-libros of Gower, the Duke of Sutherland, as a member of the Order of the Garter. Gilt rope roll–design at the corners of the board edges; gilt vine rolls on turn-ins. All edges gilt.    Provenance: 17th-century ownership signature signature "Leonardo di Librini" in lower area of title-page; signature "Gower, 1812" on front pastedown (i.e., George Leveson-Gower {1758–1833}, Earl Gower, later 1st Duke of Sutherland; also Gower's bookplate on front pastedown; in pencil on verso of front free endpaper, "C.P.G. 1813." Lately in the library of American collector Albert A. Bound as above; areas of the turn-ins abraded and some headlines touched by the binder's knife. Title-page and last leaf with anchor and dolphin with light dust-soiling; a very few light spots or smudges and occasionally a paper flaw. => An attractive copy of a good book with good provenance.
