ca. 1810. 8vo (20,7 x 16,2 cm). (2), 133 pp. With 8 full-page drawings. Contemporary half-sheepskin, marbled boards. Spine with gilt fillets, gilt-lettered morocco label. An original, well-kept, very legible military manuscript on siege and fortification from antiquity to modern times. The first section describes military instruments used by the Greek and Romans, accompanied by 8 splendid full-page drawings in washed-ink, bespeaking a very skilled draughtmanship and showing a corvus, a Polyphastus, a battering ram, a movable tower, a catapult and a Ballista. The following sections discuss changes in warfare caused by the invention of gunpowder and its use in artillery, development of fortification-science, culminating in Vauban's designs and finally problems of landing operations from sea and its solutions. Van der Muelen was lecturer at the college for midshipmen of the Dutch Navy, charged with the instruction of artillery, fortification and draughtmanship, especially concerning artillery and fortification. He is known by 2 very rare publications on artillery and fortifications, both published in 1807. Excellent manuscript. .
