De la Géographie.
Manuscript: 1740. 8vo (20,8 x 17,0 cm). 193, (3) pp. Contemporary vellum over cardboard, spine with 4 raised bands, joints with 4 thongs. Elaborate legible French manuscript on geography, divided into 4 sections and 75 chapters, with a 3-page index. Some chapters providing rather condensed descriptions, whereas others very extensive and detailed. The first chapters of the first section cover the general principles of geography (sphere, globe, maps, ancient geography). The next chapters provide descriptions of the different European countries. The 2nd section is devoted to Asian countries. Africa is called the "Troisième Partie du Monde" and is covered in 14 short chapters. The last section, "Du Nouveau Monde" starts with a short general overview, including its discovery in 1492 and a history of the Spanish, English, French, Portuguese Dutch and Danish colonizations. Manuscript ending with a nicely calligraphed Finis with a pious motto. All pages numbered and lower margins with nice written catchwords, lower margins cut bit short, but outside of text. Unfortunately, the original calligraphed title wanting, only negative imprint of it on flyleaf still visible. Otherwise complete. A charming and well-kept 18th-century manuscript, nicely reflecting the geographical knowledge of that period, and even more the gap in that knowledge.
