Boston: Houghton, Mifflin And Company, 1884. First Edition. Very good in its original dark green cloth covered, beveled boards with gilt text on the spine and a facsimile of the author's signature in gilt on the front board. A small octavo of 7 1/2 by 4 3/4 inches with the cloth at the heel of the spine worn down to the lower edge of the text block, rubbing and light wear to the cloth at the head of the spine, with an early prior owner's book plate on the front paste down and the rear hinge is starting. Without a dust jacket. A selection from Thoreau's Journal edited by H. G. O. Blake. 382 pages including an index followed by sixteen pages of ads from the publisher. Illustrated with a two-page map of Concord, Mass. as of 1852 placed before the title page. The fold-out, frontispiece map is in fine condition. The publisher's records indicate that only 1,260 copies (1,250 per Borst) of the first printing were produced. (BAL 20127; Borst A9.1.a and Allen p.26)
