Frederick de Wit,, Amstelodami: 1647 - Etching. Fire element, from the series of the Four Elements. Trimmed at borders. Fine impression, mounted at top corners, on larger paper. Beautiful piece. Lettered with artists, date, and publisher at bottom. Illustrations: Fire; a young boy firing a canon outside a wall, another boy at right bringing helmet and a wheel, a third behind touching his arm, armour lying in foreground, barrel and cannon balls at left. Hollar (1607-1677), Bohemian, active in London. One of the premier etchers and draftsmen of the 17th century, Wenceslaus Hollar is known for his landscape, architectural and topographical views, still lifes and depictions of women?s fashions. Citations: Pennington 523. Hollstein 941. BM: 1875, 0710.620 (2nd state). First state (?). Possibly third state, ?1? is at lower right corner.
