Les Miserables
New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1938. Limited Edition. All five volumes of this five volume set are small quartos measuring 10 1/2" by 7" in near fine or better conditions uniformly bound in black cloth covered boards with gilt stamped orange title labels on the spines. The end sheets for most of the volumes have minor, circular tape stains in the fore corners most likely due to the original glassine dust jackets having been taped in place over each volume. Without dust jackets as issued. Translated from the original French by Lascelles Wraxall and with an introduction by Andre Maurois. This set is one of only 1,500 copies printed with this set numbered 106 and signed by the illustrator, Lynd Ward. Illustrated throughout with wood cuts by Lynd Ward. Volume I is subtitled: Fantine; volume II is Cosette; volume III is Marius; Volume IV is Idlyl of the Rue Plumet; and volume V is Jean Valjean. Considered by many to be one of the one hundred greatest books ever written and believed to be Hugo's masterpiece against which few, if any, titles can compare. The genius of the author shines even through other mediums such as the movies and theatrical productions which have been based on the book. The first English translation appeared in London, followed closely by the American edition. When it was released in the U.S. it became an immediate best seller. It was often found in the saddlebags of officers from both the Federal and Confederate sides during the Civil War. It was the second most popular book of its age coming in after Uncle Tom's Cabin.
