History of the Conquest of Peru 1524-1550
Mexico City: The Limited Editions Club, 1957. First published in 1847. Introduction by Samuel Eliot Morison. Copy no. 701 of 1500 copies made by Harry Block at the Imprenta Nuevo Mundo, Mexico City. With illustrations by Everett Gee Jackson. Apparently signed on the colophon page in a neat ink hand by the printer and the illustrator, but not so guaranteed. Bound in light brown full marbled sheep (pasta espaƱola). Hubbed spine. Three of the spine compartments with gilt-stamped purple leather [?] labels. The binding is in superb condition. 12.75 x 8.75 inches. Unbumped and with sharp corners. Square and tight. Text block firmly bound in. Attractive page edges speckled with tiny charcoal dots. With xxxvi and 252 numbered pages. Printed on fine, cream-colored laid paper. Several handsome and bright half-page color illustrations throughout. An immensely clean copy with no blemishes noted. Almost certainly unread, and respectfully treated. The medium-duty purple paper-backed slipcase is present. However, there is no spine label on the slipcase. The slipcase a little scuffed and age-faded but still sturdy. A Near Fine copy in a Very Good slipcase. The monthly letter prospectus for this edition is not present. Prescott's classic account of the clash of empires in Peru and the destruction of that of the Inca. The book was designed and issued to be a companion volume to the Club's printing of Bernal Diaz del Castillo's Discovery and Conquest of Mexico (Mexico City, 1942).. First Edition Thus. Full-Leather. Near Fine. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.
