William Whyte and Co., Edinburgh. 1840 - 8vo. 5.25 x 8 inches. iv + 428 pp. Illustrated by folding map at end, with author's routes marked in red. Bound in original publisher's cloth, blind stamped borders enclosing decorations on boards; decorative lettering, gilt on spine. Extremities worn, spine edges snagged but repaired. Map is spotted and. has slight tear along one fold. Some browning, traces left by a pressed flower and occasional pencil notes in margin. Otherwise fine condition. In spite of the title, this traveller's account covers the whole of the northern and eastern highlands, but does include several chapters on the northern isles. A companion volume, Scotland and the Scotch; or, The Western Circuit described a journey through the western highlands and isles. Both works were first published in 1840 and reprinted several times, before a combined edition appeared in 1859. Catherine Sinclair (1800-64) was a daughter of Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster (1754-1835), the famous Scottish agriculturist. She was best known as a novelist and children's writer.
