FIRST EDITION 1878, 4to, 255 x 185, 10 x 7ΒΌ inches, title page printed red and black, engraved frontispiece of real tennis, Paris 1632, 45 further illustrations, some full page, on 27 plates, 226 pages including index, rebound in full green cloth, gilt lettering to spine, gilt rackets and balls to upper cover, top edge gilt, brown endpapers. EX LIBRARY COPY from Guildhall Library, with their bookplate on first pastedown and a pale ink withdrawn stamp beneath, presented by Miss D. Marshall to the library, one of Julian Marshall's 3 daughters, Dorothy, signed in pencil on endpaper, pale withdrawn ink stamp to bottom of title page, small stamp to verso of title page, small pale stamps to blank side of all plates and an occasional stamp to lower blank margin, not affecting text, hinges partly split and neatly repaired, inner paper hinges expertly repaired, slight evidence of a library number at bottom of spine, contents clean and bright, binding tight and firm. A very good rebound copy of the original edition, this is not the reprint. This is the first attempt in English at a general history and description of the game of real tennis.
