Original blue pictorial cloth, lettered in gilt; pp. xiv, [2], 399, [16, advertisements], plates after photographs, illustrations in the text; small spot on front cover, obliterating two letters of the illustrator's name, very light rippling to spine, offsetting from endpapers, otherwise a very good cloth with ownership inscription L. Maud Trayes, 1898 on front fly-leaf. First edition of an important book on Thailand. The author had lived for several years in Bangkok and travelled the surounding country, studying Thai way of life, food, rites, belief systems, social organization and the architecture. In the sections on food Young points out the immense number of mobile food booths and the street food culture.
