Housed in custom half morocco clamshell box. $3000.Second edition of ""the most authoritative study of American social and political institutions,"" this copy inscribed in both volumes by Benjamin Harrison: ""For my friend & PastorÂ… Benj. Harrison, May 9, 1893.""Harrison was President of the United States from 1888 to 1892. The inscriptions are written in black ink on the dark green coated free endpapers of each volume. ""Bryce was an ardent Liberal in politics, and in 1880 he was elected to parliamentÂ… [In] 1907 he was appointed British ambassador at WashingtonÂ… His great work The American Commonwealth was the first in which the institutions of the United States had been thoroughly discussed from the point of view of a historian and a constitutional lawyer, and it at once became a classic"" (Britannica). It is ""the most authoritative study of American social and political institutions"" (Howes B906), with critical reviews and an examination not only of social institutions, but both federal and state governments, and the party system. This second edition includes the later-suppressed chapters on the Tweed Ring. This two-volume second edition was issued the same year as the three-volume first edition. Howes B906. Expert restoration to original cloth. Very good condition, scarce and desirable inscribed by Harrison.
