Photograph inscribed
1930. Signed. PERSHING, John J. Photograph inscribed. No place: circa 1930. Photograph measures approximately 5 by 7 inches; with full border, approximately 8 by 10 inches. $1500.Handsome photogravure of General Pershing in military uniform, inscribed: “For Cook Post, American Legion, Yonkers, New York. With cordial good wishes. John J. Pershing.”John Joseph “Black Jack” Pershing was the most accomplished American soldier of WWI. Pershing’s charismatic personality and his extensive experience in prior military initiatives had made him the logical choice to command the Allied Expeditionary Force during World War I. After the Allied victory in 1918, Pershing emerged as the most celebrated American hero of the war. Congress honored him by creating a new rank, General of the Armies, and he later served as Chief of Staff from 1921 to 1926. The inscription and the signature are written in two different inks, signifying that the inscription was in all probability written at a later date. Fine condition.
