Octavo, contemporary full brown speckled calf, raised bands, russet morocco spine labels. $1650.First edition in English of this landmark account of scientific exploration, filled with perceptive observations on the anthropology, flora, fauna, geology and mineralogy of South America, as well as an assessment of the current Spanish political situation, with seven engraved plates of city plans, landscapes, and native life.Spanish admiral and polymath Antonio de Ulloa and scientist Jorge Juan y Santacilla accompanied the 1736 expedition, sponsored by the Paris Academy of Sciences, to the equinoctial regions of South America with instructions to measure the arc of meridian from that area, in order to calculate the true shape of the earth. The party travelled throughout western South America, exploring the Andes and the upper Amazon basin, crossing patagonian deserts, and visiting major cities. Originally published in Madrid in 1748, Ulloa and Juan’s account of the mission is filled with perceptive observations on anthropology, flora, fauna, cartography, geology, disease, magnetism, and mineralogy. Appearing ten years after Walter’s account of Anson’s voyages, this work provided the British with valuable new political information concerning Spanish territories in South America. “Juan and Ulloa’s Travels may be selected as the most entertaining and satisfactory work of its kind; they are the acknowledged source of much that has been published in other forms” (Sabin).
