In 19th century quarter tan calf with marbled sides. Spine with four raised bands, gilt outlined, with gilt stars in the compartments. Spine rubbed and slightly damaged at head; lacking label. 73, [9] leaves; signatures: A-I8, K10, with catchwords; no colophon. Text in Italian and Latin. Printed in italic type. Title-page with Aldine device; partially-erased signature 'Antonii Monsini [?]' at head; paper repair to lower corner, not affecting text. Some sepia ink doodles on verso of title and tracing of Aldine logo. Prefatory letter to Ludovico Beccadelli, Archbishop of Dubrovnik, dated the last day of June, 1556, signed '... Aldo Manutio, figliuolo di Paolo'; initial space with guide-letters. Manuscript line numbers in margins throughout in sepia ink; pen scrolls and doodles in margins on f.48. Includes index. Errata leaf, K10, with paper repair to upper corner not affecting text; manuscript annotations on verso. A few other minor repairs to margins. Some damp-marking in top foredge corner of leaves from about f.66 to end. Crisp, clean and tight. A forerunner of the modern thesaurus, this list of Italian words arranged alphabetically with illustrations of their use, based on Latin examples drawn mainly from Cicero, was greatly augmented in later editions. Believed by Renouard and others to be the work of Paolo Manuzio, perhaps for the instruction, and with the assistance of his son Aldo, who was not yet nine years old at the time of this first edition in 1556.
