„First work in modern Armenian historical scholarship"
CHAMCHEAN, Mikayel: Khrakhchan patmutean hayots [A Short History of Armenia]. With 1 engraved frontispiece, 1 engraved printer's emblem on title page, as well as wood-cuts of 5 chapter vignettes, 6 ornamental frames and 8 chapter initials. Venice: Vans Srboyn Ghazaru [Mekhitarist monastery at San Lazzaro] 1811. 8to. [3 leafs (title, preface, frontispiece)], 494 p. Half calf binding from around 1900 with gilt ornamental title printing on spine as well as blue cloth boards. Second, compiled edition of this „first work in modern Armenian historical scholarship" (Adalian) by eminent historian, linguist and Mekhitarist monk Mikayel Chamchean (also Chamchian, 1738-1823). The 1st ed. of this fundamental work was published in 3 vol. between 1784-86 by the Mekhitarist Congregation in Venice, that Chemchean, originally trained as a jeweler in his home town Constantinople, joined in 1762. In the San Lazzaro monastery he vastly became a leading intellectual figure, was appointed instructor of Armenian language and wrote the first descriptive Armenian grammar in 1779. Preceding „Armenian History" however is Chemcheans masterpiece. He was the first to date the very formation of the Armenian people and also delivered the founding date of Christiandom in Armenia. - The well engraved frontispiece shows an allegorical scene. Top and bottom of spine as well as corners bumped and worn, binding at front and rear joint slightly loose, front paper recto and title page with old stamp of „Armenska Evangelska Tsarkva" (Armenian Evangelical Church), Ruse (Bulgaria), inside marginally finger stained and foxy, pp. 314, 321, 326, 340, 346, 361, 364, 396, 422 and 450 with small remarks with pencil as well as pen. Otherwise fine copy of this extremly rare edition, showing an elegant, narrow typeface in a broad frame and printed on mould paper. OCLC, KVK and Google show only one copy worldwide at Columbia University. Bardakjian, p. 309f.; Adalian zit. WBIS/AIBA 2.0061.339f.
