With a biographical postscript by Richard Leachman and signed by him. Includes Part I: The Light, Part II: The Cave and Part III: The Glory. Sticker on inside front cover: "This is copy 3 of 24 copies only. Initalled "RW" " ("RW" refers to The Amate Press publisher Robin Waterfield who was a good friend of Iris Murdoch). Foreword signed by Iris Murdoch in blue ink. With a Note on the Socratic Club by Robin Waterfield and signed by him. Minor blue dot on verso of half title. Laid-in is a note signed again by publisher Robin Waterfield. Signed again by Iris Murdoch on the title page and inscribed by her to her friends: "For Chantal and Brian Stella's philosophy in part traced by me in tabular form [see rear inset] to add to your collection. Iris Murdoch." Included is an original manuscript leaf by Iris Murdoch in rear pocket. She refers to this page in her inscription. A near pristine copy and scarce item. Iris Murdoch (1919-1999) was an Irish born English philosopher, novelist, critic and academic. She is considered one of the greatest British writers of the twentieth century.
