Original drawing signed (Noodle)
1937. Signed. BEMELMANS, Ludwig. Original drawing signed (Noodle). No place: : circa 1937. Original ink-and-crayon drawing measuring 13-1/2 by 19-1/2 inches; matted and framed, entire piece measures 20 by 26 inches. WITH: LEAF, Munro. Noodle. New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1937. $13,800.Large and lovely original ink-and-crayon drawing by Bemelmans of Noodle, the dachshund who stars in the artist’s popular collaboration with writer Munro Leaf, titled and signed by Bemelmans. The creators of The Story of Ferdinand (Leaf) and Madeline (Bemelmans) collaborated—Leaf writing the text, Bemelmans drawing the pictures—to produce this ""happy, moral tale about a dachshund who, even after a visit from a magical wish-granting dog-fairy, judiciously chooses to remain exactly the same size and shape he is"" (Silvey, 397). Leaf and Bemelmans' project was inspired by Dutch-American historian and children's book author Hendrik van Loon's dachshund. Bemelmans' large, beautiful original drawing, executed in black ink and brown crayon—signed by the artist and titled, in his hand, ""Sketch for Noodle""—depicts the dog stretched out atop a ruler. The image appears as page [7] in the finished book, opposite the text, ""who was very long from front - - - - to - - - - back."" With a first edition, third printing copy of the book.. Book without original dust jacket. Original signed drawing fine. A delightful and unique piece.
