Roughing It In the Bush ; or Life in Canada. Second London Edition, With Additions
London: Richard Bentley,  8 New Burlington Street Publisher in Ordinary to Her Majesty, 1852. 2nd. Hard Cover. Very Good. 2 volumes, 12mo. 13.5cm x 20.5cm (5 1/4" x 8"). Original dark green cloth professionally re-backed with original spine some time ago. Original tan endpapers in both volumes. Both volumes have a gilt embossed illustration on front covers, which depicts a log cabin with campfire and 3 people. Both volumes are slightly cocked with the type on spine quite readable. Very good condition overall. Second, and considered better or more complete edition, with an extra, 41 pages (pp. [295]-336) chapter entitled, "Canadian Sketches," added to volume II, which does not appear first London edition, volume II., Probable previous owner: Henry W. Andrews - Andrews was born in New York State in 1829. By 1851 at the age of 22, he is noted as a merchant, living in the boarding house of Joseph Fuller, a carpenter in Auburn, NY. By 1867-68, the Cayuga, New York directory lists Andrews associated with the firm Andrews and Ball. He married Frances V. Chase, and by the 1870 census, Andrews, still listed as a merchant, had a daughter, Frances V. Andrews (later Cameron). Sometime between 1870 and 1880, Andrews moved to Washington D. C. and began work for the Interior Department in the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a clerk. Rising through the ranks, he ultimately became a Deputy Commissioner of Indian Affairs for the Northwest Indian Commission., VOLUME 1; pp. xx, 293, [1], [2]ads; Pages have a very light tan at edges, pages are in good condition with some wear at edges. There is a single wormhole at page edges which permeates only about 1/16"  to 1/8" into the book. There are no tears or writing in the volume except for the last page (293) which has a piece missing at the top binding edge, approx. 1 1/4" long and 1/4" deep not effecting any text. The spine has lightened in colour and the gilt type at the bottom of spine is missing LON(in LONDON) and the word BENTLY underneath this when rebacked. Previous owner's armorial bookplate on inside front cover. VOLUME 2 ÐThis volume has 336 pages.  This volume is also the same dark green olive cloth-bound hardcover as Volume 1. With gilt engraved illustration on front cover, and Title etc in gilt on spine. Also there is embossing and design on front and back covers and spine. Front cover has a couple of wear spots Ð Foxing on some pages throughout book. The cover has bumping and wear at spine ends and corners. This volume also has previous owner's armorial bookplate.
