Bound in a near contemporary halfleather binding of calf with gilt decoration on the spine. Label on the front cover partly removed. Two bookplates on pastedown. Inside is nice, crisp an clean.. First translated edition of Balmis' treatise on the benefits of agave and begonia, which was published in Madrid the year before. Balmis (1753-1819) was a Spanish physician, who studied veneral diseases and believed that agave and begonia could be used for the cure. In 1804 he lead an expedition to the Americas to hand out a vaccine for smallpox
