Glass Works Near Birmingham: Chance Bros & Co, 1862 A series of Designs Original or selected from Ancient examples. In blue cloth, corners and edges very slightly bumped, heavily decorated in gilt, title in gilt, blind tooling to front cover, no title to spine, blind tooling and smaller gilt decorative item to rear cover. Internally, NO inscriptions etc, 27 superb, full page plates of stained glass windows, some pages have 6 examples, whilst some just the one but full size. Table of contents lists, to name just a few:- Patterns of leaded Quarries, Borders & Fillets, Geometrical Patterns, Quarry Patterns, Figure of St John in a Perpendicular Window, Decorated window with a figure of the Saviour, a Decorated window with figure subjects and much more. Spectacular coloured plates, Very Rare. This copy looks as though it has the number 730 in gilt to base on front cover. Evans, artist and author, In 1857 he resigned the secretaryship and became manager of the art department of the glassworks of Messrs Chance Bros. & Co. at Oldbury, near Birmingham. He held this post for ten years, and designed many windows, including one illustrating the legend of Robin Hood for the International Exhibition in London in 1862. see ODNB for a full bio.
