, 1933. Good. 1933. Newspaper and Real Photo Postcard documenting the public lynching of convicted kidnappers, Thomas Thurmond and John Holmes, on November 26th, 1933 in San Jose, California. Newspaper headline is "Rolph Justifies Lynching. Led Hanging, Boy Boasts" and includes many large photographs of the lynch mob; newspaper is paginated A-D, 2-12, 15-30, measures 21 1/2" tall by 17" wide, front page is a pale pink with black lettering, interior leaves are toned newsprint with one interior leaf being pale pink; b&w, real photo postcard depicts Thurmond, partially clothed, and Holmes, unclothed, hung from a tree with onlookers nearby and measures 3 1/2" tall by 5 1/2" wide. Newspaper is in good condition with heavy wear to spine, small holes where once bound on spine, 1" closed tear in middle of spine, affecting content, moderate chipping at fore edge and heavy toning throughout; Real Photo Postcard is in very good condition with light creasing to top edge, light wear at corners and light soiling on verso. The gruesome San Jose lynching stemmed from the kidnapping and murder of Brooke Hart, the son of a local department store owner. Thomas Thurmond and John Holmes confessed to the kidnapping and murder and threats of lynching the two men began at once. As a lynch mob started to form, Governor Rolph was called upon to send the National Guard to keep the prisoners safe. He refused. Thurmond and Holmes were dragged from the Santa Clara County Jail by the angry mob and were hung from a tree in St. James Park. Afterwards, Governor Rolph justified the San Jose lynching saying it was "a fine lesson to a whole nation. There will be less kidnaping in the country now. They made a good job of it." .
