Original design for an 1893 Christmas card
(Birmingham, England) 1893 - An original pen-and-ink drawing for a Christmas card designed by Georgie Gaskin for Laurence W. Hodson and his family, together with a printed version of the card. Hodson, an important collector, philanthropist, and patron of the arts, was a good friend of both William Morris and Georgie and Arthur Gaskin. Dated 1893, the card is illustrated with an elaborate acanthus leaf border, reminiscent of the works of the Kelmscott Press, surrounding a scene of two girls standing in front of an apple tree. Banners amidst the branches read, "Mr & Mrs Laurence Hodson, Compton Hall, send greetings for Christmas and the New Year." In the acanthus border, more banners bear the quote, "We live in deeds, not years; in thoughts, not breaths; in feelings, not in figures on a dial." The card is signed G. C. France: this was Georgie's maiden name, before she married Arthur Gaskin, a teacher and artist who produced woodcuts for the Kelmscott Press. Both Gaskins studied at the Birmingham School of Art, were strong proponents of the Arts & Crafts movement, and embraced the style and ideas of William Morris. Georgie and Arthur Gaskin were also well-known for their elegant handmade jewelry; Georgie designed the jewelry, and her pieces often featured elaborate flowering vines, a characteristic that can readily be seen in the border of this Christmas card design. Gaskin's corrections can be seen, where she reworked the figures and tree, and the back of the card is signed "Christmas Card design, Georgie E. Cave France, Lysley, Birmingham, 6.XII.93." Drawing pasted on thick card, which is roughly trimmed, and the print shows some marginal foxing; otherwise, the drawing and print are in fine condition. (Drawing measures 7 15/16 by 5 3/8 inches; print is on a sheet measuring 9 1/8 by 6 5/8 inches, with a printed area of 7 5/8 by 5 1/8 inches).
