Mons Geertrudanus (Geertruidenberg)
Copperplate engraving of the Dutch city of Geertruidenberg, as seen from above. With explanatory title in a cartouche in the bottom right corner; 'Ciuitas Mons Geertrudanus sicuti erat dum occuparet' ab excelent: sua Mauritio de Nassou. Anno.'. The print shows the siege of Ravelijn by Prince Maurits in 1593. ca. 1612-48. Overall size: 29,5 x 39 cm; plate size: 24,5 x 33,5 cm. Fair/good state. Some age related discolouration. Handlaid paper with watermark. The bottom corners are torn and clumsily repaired with a piece of contemporary paper pasted to the back. This print originates from 'Lodovico Guicciardini, Descrittione di tutti i Paesi bassi (...), Blaeu or Janssonius, between 1612-1648'. This was an influential account of the history and the arts of the Low Countries, accompanied by city maps by various leading engravers. Deys 2001.
