Tecumseh and the Prophet of the West, An Historical Israel-Indian Tragedy, in Five Acts. With Historical Notes; Original Letters, &c. [and] The Life and History of General Harrison, Late President of the United States, Inclusive to the Treaty of Washington, of August 9th, 1842. With Original Letters, &c. And the First Oration Upon the Life, Character, and Genius of Shakspeare.
London, Longman, Brown, Green, & Longmans, 1844. Large 8vo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover ornamented and lettered in gilt, blind-stamped ornamentation; pp. [xx], 242, [2, advertisement for the aothor's Original History of Ancient America on paper ornamented in pink lithography], [2, publisher's advertisements]; ink spot on spine, light wear to extremities, initially a little foxed, 0therwise a good copy. First edition of a tragedy treating the noble heroism of Tecumseh, the leader of the Shawnee native Americans, who led a campaign against US troops under the command of William Henry Harrison, later to become the ninth president of the United States, commemorated in the second part of this volume, which is concluded by a Shakespearean adress given in 1836 at the bard's birthplace in 1836, margked on the title-page as Fourth Edition. The author, self-styled Count Johannes was an Anglo-American actor and writer who had earlier published his Original History of Ancient America, where he proved 'the identity of the Aborigines with the Tyrians and Israelites' (title). Sabin described this historical work as 'entirely speculative in its character, and grandiloquent in style', what can probably applied to Tecumseh as well. Nevertheless, this book, furnished with plenty of prefaces, all dated London, September 30, 1844, gives deep insight into the mind of an eccentric and the creation of myths about North America. Sabin 36503.
