Electricity at the Paris Exposition of 1889. Forming a Portion of Volume IV of the United States Commissioners to the Universal Exposition of 1889 at Paris
W. J. Johnston Co, New York 1893 - Paris, the City of Light, and how she gained electric lighting is explained by the author here: "The great scarcity of electric lighting in Paris, at present, is due to a great extent to the almost prohibitory conditions imposed by the city, in the form of a very high municipal tax on the power which is used for electric lighting purposes. The reason for this is that electric lighting would otherwise, to a great extent, replace gas lighting, which is in the hands of monopolists holding important privileges, who share their profits in a certain proportion with the city". (p77). This is a report on the electrical features of the Paris Universal Exposition of 1889, with an account of the work done by the International Congress of Electricians. The most important symbol of this Exposition was the Eiffel Tower, which was completed in 1889 and which visitors were only able to climb to the second floor. Another building made for the fair was the enormous Galerie Des Machines, the longest indoor space at the time, constructed of iron.Written by Carl Hering (1860 - 1926), one of the leading minds of electrical engineering, both in design and construction. Hering did research in the electrophysical and electrochemical fields, and discovered several significant natural laws.
