Paris, 1981. First edition. Hardcover. vg. 1/200. Folio (12 x 8 1/2"). [5] loose leaves (Title and introductory text in French and English), [85] loose leaves (Plates), [1] loose leaf (Colophon), as issued. Original purple cloth portfolio, with gold lettering to front cover. String ties. Title page inscribed and signed by the artist to art dealer Louis Stern, with a 9 1/4 x 4" original sketch of a flower. Splendidly illustrated throughout with 85 sketches, Yolande Ardissone's "Inde : Croquis de Voyage" reflects the artist's love and passion for India. Mixing together values which seem antinomic: work and gracefulness, the ordinary and the sacred, simplicity and elegance, movement and serenity, the sketches, drawn on the spot, give us a multitude of attitudes and fleeting visions. Their art reveals a love of the passing instant, derives inspiration from teeming crowds, and exalts in the perception of constant motion. The population is very dense, the crowd mottly and diversified, where men and animals mingle, yet we perceive no agitation; rather, beings who meditate, calm, hieratic, beyond time. The women are elegant whether they be walking, washing, working or carrying their children. Introductory text in French and English. Portfolio and interior in overall very good condition.
